Automotive: Case study

Wastewater discharge reduction

Overview

Our Customer is a global leader in the Automotive Sector. As part of the process to produce their product the volumes of water used and in turn wasted, are vast. With limited consent volumes and restraints implemented by the utilities provider, water usage is becoming a big concern. A reduction in the water usage would not only help the company benefit from reduced utility cost but also help with the company environmental goals to reduce waste and their carbon footprint.

Challenge

Following discussions with the client it was revealed that they were discharging 45,000 litres – 50,000 litres per day. With the cost of the incoming and outgoing water this cost equates to £32,000 - £37,000 per annum down the drain. A solution needs to be found. A sample of the waste water was taken for a full spectrum analysis of the contaminants in the solution. Once the results were received, it was quickly apparent that a solution could be provided.

Solution

We were able to offer waste water recycling system that would clean up the waste water and re introduce the clean water upstream, thus, not only reducing the waste water discharge but also reducing the need for fresh water to be bought into the process.

Results

Our initial calculations suggested that the system would be able to reduce the waste water discharge by 80%. Meaning a waste discharge reduction from 45,000 – 50,000 litres down to 8,000 – 10,000 litres per day, giving a dramatic environmental impact and a cost saving of £25,000 – £29,000 per year on the utility cost. After further investigated it was discovered that there could be even more of a reduction and saving.

Adding a secondary filtration pass on to the downstream side of the initial system, we could make a total waste water saving of 95%. Meaning a waste discharge reduction from 45,000 – 50,000 litres down to 2,250 – 2,500 litres per day, this is a huge saving on both the environmental impact and a cost. With this secondary filtration system it would mean a potential cost saving of £30,326 – £35,180 per year on the utility cost. With our Value Proposition, we were also able to offer this bespoke water recycling system on a lease or hire option giving the customer a sustainable financial framework.
